Fifty years ago intravenous insulin was found to be an hypoglycaemic stimulus of gastric acid secretion,1061 and 30 years ago Hollander553 suggested that this test might be used to determine the completeness of vagal denervation. The history of the insulin test has been described by Bachrach.42 This chapter is, therefore, limited to discussing the problems of performing and interpreting the insulin test in the unoperated subject.
