All reported gastric secretory studies have shown that patients with duodenal ulcer have significantly higher than normal results for volume, acidity and acid output, both in their basal secretions and in their response to stimuli such as test meals, caffeine, submaximal and maximal histamine, histalog and pentagastrin. Similar results have been obtained for gastric pepsin and intrinsic factor, for urine and serum pepsinogens, and for basal and stimulated serum gastrin.
