Before the introduction of the augmented histamine test most authors reported that patients with gastric ulcer secreted a greater volume of gastric juice, with a lower titratable acidity, than normal subjects (table 15.1). When measurements of maximal acid output became possible it was realised that, as a whole, patients with gastric ulcer have normal basal and maximal acid outputs (table 15.1), corresponding to the normal number of parietal cells in their stomachs.294 There is no correlation between ulcer size (estimated radiologically) and peak acid output.809
