Abstract

Held in Florence from 12 to 14 November, 1975, the Fourth Parliamentary and Scientific Conference was formally opened at nine o’clock on the morning of Wednesday, 12 November by Giuseppe Vedovato, Senator for Florence, former president of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly, chairman of the conference’s organising committee. He briefly recalled the history of this series of meetings between scientists and parliamentarians. The first, held under the joint auspices of the Council of Europe and OECD, in London in 1961, had been organised by the British parliamentary and scientific committee. The second, held in Vienna in 1964, was organised by the Council of Europe and OECD. For the third, held in Lausanne in 1972, and for the fourth here in Florence, the Council of Europe had assumed responsibility for the organisation, but the preparations for both were made in partnership with OECD. This partnership, said Senator Vedovato, was clearly essential to the success of this series of meetings.
