The Revenger’s Tragedy Revived

Abstract

The Revenger’s Tragedy has, I suppose, a thinner stage history than any contemporary play of comparable reputation. Most of the better-known tragedies of Webster, Middleton, Massinger, and Beaumont and Fletcher have been professionally performed, often in adaptation, at some time or other between the time they were written and our own age. But when R. A. Foakes prepared his Revels Plays edition of The Revenger’s Tragedy the only professional production to which he could refer was that at the Pitlochry Festival, still in the future.
