Abstract

As we have seen, redundancy induced in a metal-forming system will result in an additional straining of the material and will therefore be reflected, for a given set of conditions, in the magnitude of the operative load or torque. Generally, however, analytical methods of estimating these variables are based on the magnitude of the homogeneous deformation present in a process and do not therefore include the effect of redundancy. Consequently it is not only necessary to estimate the level of redundancy in a given operation, but it is also imperative to devise means of incorporating this information into the assessment of the load (and other) requirements, the properties of the component formed and the possibility of optimising the process.
