The True Birthplace of Joseph Conrad

  • Ugo Mursia

Abstract

Fifty years after Joseph Conrad’s death, we still don’t know exactly where he was born. The early biographies published in Conrad’s own lifetime — those of Richard Curler1 and Hugh Walpole2 — dealt vaguely with his birthplace, speaking of the ‘Ukraine in the South of Poland’ or of ‘Russian Poland in the Kiev area of the Ukraine’,3 and so on.
