Abstract

The complete amino acid sequences of the bovine (BPTH) and porcine (PPTH) parathyroid hormones, as well as the sequence of the biologically active amino-terminal portion of human PTH (HPTH), have been determined within the last decade. Subsequent synthesis of fragments has permitted a systematic analysis of structure-activity relationships in the PTH molecule and has provided large amounts of peptide for detailed biochemical, physiological and immunological studies. The existence of a biosynthetic precursor, or prohormone, for parathyroid hormone in man and other mammalian species has recently been recognised, and the pro-hormonal forms have also been isolated and structurally characterised.
