Increased albumin catabolism in early uremia as a cause of protein depletion

Abstract

The present study was undertaken with the aim of assessing acute changes of albumin turnover in the early phase of uremia, in order to explain the pathogenesis of protein depletion in that condition1 – 3. Previous turnover tracer experiments have shown that such a depleted state does not depend on protein restriction in the diet followed by the patients, assuming that the uremics were in a metabolic steady-state at the time of the study1 – 3. Therefore, it was supposed that some rapid transitory changes of albumin turnover occurred in the early phase of renal failure, during which catabolism exceeds production, without compensation by subsequent periods of relative excess production.
