Alternative Synthetic Fuels

Hydrogen and Energy

Part of the book series: Energy Alternatives Series

Abstract

We have seen that the production of hydrogen requires a net input of energy, but because of the physical and chemical properties of hydrogen, a total systems analysis may reveal that its use can lead to an overall conservation of energy when the total production-delivery-use ‘cycle’ is considered. Moreover, its use as a fuel can lead to a conservation of existing hydrocarbon resources and, because hydrogen fits well into current technological fuel manipulations, its use can lead to conservation of capital and economic resources.
