I have been asked to write about my attitude to historical writing and research. This is a tall order — too much so for here and now. I can only say at this point that, with me, literature — in particular, the writing of poetry — came long before history. It may be that that is the right order — Macaulay thought poetry belongs to the childhood of a civilisation, and ‘as civilisation advances, poetry almost necessarily declines’.
