Abstract
IT would be asking too much for this survey of internal trade in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to offer firm conclusions. Too many questions remain as yet unanswered, and some unasked. Statements of greater certainty, given the work on the period by Willan and others, are possible for the seventeenth century, but much of the sixteenth century remains a dark age. In this context, for the years up to 1600 at least, the proper response of the student to suggestions here which imply some certainty is scepticism.
