Abstract

The anonymous Interlude of Apius and Virginia of about 1560 includes one of the earliest acting-directions in printed Interludes referring to the use of a stage. The word employed there is “scaffold” and the full direction reads “Here let Virginius go about the scaffold.” (See the line marked with an asterisk in the analysis of the play which follows.)
