Abstract

So far we have discussed only the open orbit as it exists in the dog and cat. The depth and shape of the orbit varies in the different species of animals and the degree of protection afforded by the bony casing. This is greater in man, in the higher apes and in most of the herbivorous animals but is incomplete in the pig, in which it resembles that of the dog. The orbit in the horse is closed.
