Abstract
The modern care of patients with chronic renal disease consists of two phases, the first in which every possible attempt is made to prevent progressive loss of renal function—the phase of conservative management; and the second in which renal function is replaced by dialysis and renal transplantation—the phase of replacement therapy. The relationship of these treatments is shown schematically in figure 11.1.
