Abstract
The period covered by this research saw far-reaching changes in the environment of French business. In 1950, the first year for which company data were collected, the French economy was beginning to emerge from an era of stagnation that had culminated in the devastation of the Second World War. By 1952 GNP had just surpassed its previous all-time high, achieved in 1929. Under the close supervision of the state, the early post-war years ushered in an era of economic growth.
