Summary
The paper describes briefly the existing situation in Scotland as regards the in-patient provision for paraplegics. The Scottish planning principles, on which the design of modern wards is based, are outlined and emphasis is placed on the functional aspects of ward planning and the provision of amenity and privacy for patients. Some areas are described in detail and the reasons for the planning decisions made are explained.
The special design requirements of paraplegic patients are discussed. Although the provision of specific movable equipment for paraplegic units is not elaborated the necessity of providing suitable fixed equipment is considered. The requirement of adequate day space for patients in wheelchairs, trolleys and beds is noted, including the availability for education, diversional and recreational purposes of these spaces, together with areas for games and outdoor recreation.
