The Organic Chemistry of Mercury

Abstract

There is general agreement as to what constitutes an organic compound, but what is encompassed by the term ‘organometallic’ is more controversial. We have taken the view that organomercury compounds are species in which there is bonding between mercury and organic carbon. Thus compounds such as Hg(OPr)2, Hg(NEt2)2 or Hg(SiMe3)2 in which mercury is attached to some other atom of an organic moiety are regarded as inorganic mercurials and are not considered here. Further, in the belief that it is the metal-carbon interaction that is of central interest in organometallic chemistry, our treatment of organomercury reactions is concentrated on those involving the mercury-carbon bond. Thus reactions of the Hg-X bond in organomercurials of the type RHgX are considered only in as much as they provide a route to new compounds in the same series (RHgY) and to the fully organic mercurials (R2Hg).
