Abstract

Many strands in global politics were crossed when, with the October War of 1973, Arabs and Israelis waged their fourth round since 1948. A crisis on the rim of the West brought one to pass within it. But this had long been germinating.

This essay was first published as an article, ‘Ganging up against Israel’, in the Spectator (London, 12 Jan 1974).
