Abstract
Beam centring devices are necessary for accurate patient positioning. They indicate the direction of the “central ray” of the X-ray beam and its point of incidence on the area under examination. The more advanced beam centring devices also provide a means of adjustment of the size of the irradiated area, and indicate the chosen area on the surface of the patient by means of light projection. Beam centring aids may be categorised as follows:

Simple centre pointer.

(ii)
Focussed cross lights.

(iii)
Light beam diaphragms.

(iv)
Optical view finders.

(v)
Other beam centring devices.
