The initial protest against Christianity was often a moral one, coupled with a sense of incredulity at the claims made in the Bible. Here, as in so many other things, Paine’s Age of Reason led the way. Part 1 was written in Paris in 1794, and towards the end of the work Paine set down his own earliest doubts.
