Public opinion was invariably hostile to the infidels, and every attempt was made to tar them with accusations of immorality and sedition as well as blasphemy. The Owenites of Manchester aroused the wrath of the great Evangelical leader, the Rev. Hugh Stowell, and a committee for which he was responsible drew the following letter from a Morning Herald correspondent. The Owenite New Moral World was sufficiently amused to reproduce the letter in large type.
