The choice of an R & D portfolio

Abstract

Research and development are seldom nowadays pursued for their own sake. Even the universities, still the centres of the most basic research, would accept that they have a role of underpinning British science through the production of trained research workers and the setting up of a framework of scientific knowledge. In most other cases, however, the role of R & D is even more directly related to the strategy of the parent organisation.
