Abstract
The bulk of the essays here printed have appeared in various journals and symposia over a number of years. No excuse, it is felt, need be offered for republishing them. Some of the studies were published in journals or symposia read as a rule by economic historians only, while others were printed in journals the readership of which is confined mainly to students of Eastern Europe. It is hoped that their publication in book form will make these studies accessible to a wider range of readers. Several sections have been restructured or expanded, and a new essay is added.
