Abstract
Steroids are defined as compounds which contain the cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene nucleus. The basic steroid nucleus can be modified in various ways to produce a wide range of naturally occurring hydrocarbons, among which are the adrenocortical hormones, sex hormones, sterols proper, the cardiac glycosides, the sapogenins, and some alkaloids. Consideration in this paper will be given to the action of representatives of the adrenocortical steroids, male and female sex hormones and the cardiac glycosides on the transport of sodium and chloride.
