Abstract
Interest in renal thiol groups is related in large part to the potent diuretic action of several organic mercurial compounds. Following administration of both diuretic and nondiuretic organic mercurial compounds there occurs a reduction in protein-bound sulphydryl groups of the renal tubule (Farah & Kruse, 1960). The diuretic response and the corresponding reduction of protein-bound sulphydryl groups are both reversed by administration of the dithiol, dimercaprol (Cafruny & Farah, 1956). This observation has implicated renal thiol groups in the diuretic response to organic mercurial compounds.
