Abstract
Interest in the transport of organic acids in the brain has been aroused by the finding that several of the chemical substances which are thought to act as transmitters of neuronal activity in the brain are metabolized to acidic derivatives. The attention of research workers has been focused on the metabolism of 5-hydroxytryptamine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethylamine (dopamine) and noradrenaline in the brain. The major metabolic pathways of these biogenic amines are illustrated in Fig. 1.
