Abstract

In chapter 2 we examined the stresses in thin-walled cylinders subjected to internal pressure. The assumption of thin walls allowed us to develop a simple analysis that ignored the variation of radial stress. When the wall thickness becomes appreciable in proportion to the cylinder radius, this variation in radial stress must be taken into account in order to determine the correct distribution of stresses. The theory is due to the French military engineer and mathematician, G. Lamé.
