Abstract

The Onsager reciprocal relations between irreversible processes are derived from the time (motion) reversal invariance of the microscopic equations of motion within the framework of two models: first, the statistical theory of macroscopic quantities and linear regression laws, and second, the kinetic theory of gases.

Recently a relativistic version of the latter theory has been developed, in which also reciprocal relations have been derived.

  45. For particles without internal degrees of freedom volume viscosity is shown to be a relativistic phenomenon in the framework of kinetic theory; thus also the reciprocal relation mentioned in section 9.3.4, which arises if volume viscous flow and a relaxation process occur together.
