From Thermostatics to Thermodynamics

Abstract

Regarding thermodynamics as the last branch of classical physics, its structure results as a consequence of energy conservation and the trivial facts concerning dissipation and heat flow. Entropy emerges as a logical inference for systems in equilibrium which are described by only one internal coordinate. In nonequilibrium, more than one internal variable can exist, allowing the possibility of several partial entropies.

The concept of a fundamental thermodynamic equation is introduced and a set of postulates suggested to build a new structure. All results of classical thermostatics are recovered if no internal constraints exist. Compatibility with the results of stability in classical thermodynamics and continuum mechanics is shown.
