The title of this lecture is obviously too wide. It is impossible to deal with the whole dollar problem in fifty minutes. It is necessary to select a few aspects, and even some of these can be dealt with only superficially. I am not clear in my own mind about the answers to some of the questions I shall raise; so perhaps you will regard this as a preliminary report — a throwing out of ideas, some of which may, I hope, be at least provocative.
