Abstract
Several difficulties, in particular the lack of surviving constituency archives, face any attempt to trace the decline of the Liberal Party in the major cities. However, in municipal electoral activity there is one vital source of evidence which provides rich and hitherto untouched material for an analysis of the decline of the party.
