Abstract
From the first results, it was clear that the Conservative Party had fared badly. The first declaration, from the Exchange division of Manchester, showed a swing against the government of 11.8 per cent. This early result from Manchester was followed by a succession of Conservative defeats in Cheshire and Lancashire.
