Abstract

The European Communities rely for their legal existence upon two treaties: the Treaty of Paris 1951, which set up the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952; and the Treaty of Rome 1957, which set up in 1958 both the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), to help in the development of the civil nuclear energy industry in Europe, and the European Economic Community (the Common Market).
