Abstract
Those who are interested in the mechanism of economic development have a good deal to learn from the experience of the pioneer countries. A broad historical background provides a kind of ballast for one’s approach to economic development. But the situation of developing countries today is, in certain respects, very different from that of the pioneer countries. These differences have important practical consequences. It is, therefore, important not to lose sight of them.
