With computer numerical control the design emphasis changes from being hardware orientated to software orientated. While the user will not see any radical external changes, merely because the machine tool is being driven by a computer numerical control (CNC) system, the design changes are considerable. User demand for a cheap, but reliable system places stringent constraints on the software design.

A typical software system is described in the paper to provide an understanding of the software requirements. Features and problems associated with CNC design, field applications and maintenance are also described in this paper.
