Summary

This paper describes the circumstances which led to the setting up of a research and development unit to meet the needs of a machine tool manufacturing group, and some of the factors considered when doing so. The size of the unit is touched upon, and examples given of the wide range of topics dealt with during its twelve years’ operation. Other sources of research endeavour used are briefly mentioned, and in conclusion the cost of the unit and economic considerations are discussed.
