Abstract
His studies took Nernst to Zürich, Berlin, Graz and Wuerzburg. These apparently aimless meanderings from university to university acquire a very different aspect when one takes a look at the professors who taught at these centres. In Berlin there was Hermann von Helmholtz, the acknowledged leader of physics in Germany who had made fundamental contributions to almost every aspect of the subject. In Wuerzburg Friedrich Kohlrausch broke fresh ground with his researches on the electrical conductivity in liquids and in Graz Ludwig Boltzmann had founded a school of thought which applied statistics to the phenomena of heat. All these men stood in the forefront of research and Boltzmann in particular was the pioneer who introduced the atomistic concept in physics.
