Summary

A brief introduction to the finite element method is given, and a program system is described which permits structures to be analysed with respect to their static characteristics. The first part of the system is applicable to the deformation computation of structures approximated by flat elements and beams. The second part of the program system is used for the analysis of deformations and stresses in continuous three-dimensional components.

Some convergence tests, presented in the paper, demonstrate the accuracy to be obtained by the application of the program system. Further, various examples for a finite element analysis of problems arising in machine tool design are explained.
