Summary
The dynamic performance of an impact damper boring bar relative to that of a conventional solid bar of the same diameter is assessed by cutting tests. The device is optimised for a specific overhang by altering the mass ratio and the free mass stroke. The effect of the overhang variation on the chatter performance is also investigated. It is concluded that the impact damper boring bar allows cutting at greatly increased chatter-free widths of cut, particularly at larger values of the length to diameter ratio.
