Summary
In the design of numerical control systems for machine tools several advantages may be gained by basing the control system on a small, general-purpose, digital computer rather than on special-purpose electronics, particularly on more complex machines. At the National Engineering Laboratory such a CNC system is being developed in modular form so that it may be applied to a wide range of machines. Initial development has taken place on a Herbert Co-ordatrol drill. This paper describes the system with particular emphasis on the software which, it is believed, has some valuable new features.
