Abstract
A common requirement in digital computing and instrumentation systems is for some means of storing binary numbers or sequences as logic levels. As will be seen in chapter 9, it is also desirable to be able to manipulate the stored data by shifting to the right or left. Storage and shift registers are collections of bistable elements arranged for the storage and manipulation by left or right shifts of relatively small amounts of binary data. Necessary requirements for such registers are the ability to take in data from a suitable source, preserve the data and have it available for use when required.
