Abstract
In the study of engineering, a distinction is usually drawn between two types of systems, identified by the adjectives linear and digital respectively. In a book whose purpose is a study of systems which form a subdivision of one of these categories, it is appropriate to commence by considering the essential differences between the two types of systems. Of course, as is the case with many such attempts at rigid classification, the distinction between digital and linear systems is not as sharp as is implied, since many systems include both linear and digital elements.
