Every great literature has some work, early in its history, which crystallises the tradition and defines its possibilities. Such a work is Piers Plowman. It would be difficult to exaggerate the centrality of this poem. Behind it stands the entire corpus of medieval preaching. Before it stretches English. There are very few major works in our language not influenced by Piers Plowman, directly or indirectly. And the language itself diminishes in efficacy as it draws farther away from its central masterpiece.
