Shakespeare never wrote like Ben Jonson, but he came close to it in Measure for Measure. Not in the detail, though some of the Duke’s distasteful practical jokes remind us of the jokes Jonson’s characters play on one another. The spirit of the thing is Jonsonian — Jonson without the frenzy and with saving graces, the literal sense of which I shall try to explain.
