Abstract

Sara left school at the age of 16 and joined a local printing firm as a junior clerk. Her employer noticed that Sara learned quickly and he offered her the opportunity to attend a beginner’s secretarial course at a local technical college on a day-release basis. Sara completed the two-year course and attended evening classes twice a week for an additional year to improve her typing and shorthand speeds. By the end of that year, she had gained certificates for 120 wpm in shorthand and 50 wpm in typewriting.
