Collection and Preliminary Observations

The macrofungi, such as the mushrooms and toadstools, grow abundantly in the tropics and provide an excellent opportunity for study. Unfortunately in the tropics, fleshy fungi develop and decompose very quickly; it is rather difficult to examine all these specimens before they decay and is certainly impossible to record all their macroscopic and microscopic features, to sketch or paint, and to prepare satisfactory dried or preserved specimens for the herbarium at the same time. Obviously to do all this, specimens should be examined repeatedly and one must plan to study the living fungi over several seasons.
