Before turning to more complex questions of theory we can quickly dismiss the harmonistic tinge of the more extreme versions of ‘the end of ideology’ thesis. Even relatively successful bargaining between employer and worker does not answer all the important needs of workers. Whatever other industrial attitudes they may hold, workers show unmistakable signs of conscious deprivation which we might well wish to term alienation. This holds for all the countries we have examined.
