Hydromagnetic Plasma Instabilities

Abstract

The further we pursue our study of the plasma state, the clearer it becomes that instabilities play a central role in plasma phenomenon. In very many cases the equilibrium of a plasma is stationary,* i.e., in the absence of a perturbation the plasma state can persist indefinitely, although it is unstable to an arbitrarily small perturbation.
