Abstract
In order to convert a gas into a plasma state it is necessary to tear away at least some of the electrons from the atoms, thereby converting these atoms into ions. This detachment of electrons from atoms is called ionization. The detailed mechanism of ionization on the atomic-molecular level will be examined below. Here we limit ourselves to a discussion of the general characteristics of this process.
